Other options/suggestions for homework and supporting student learning at home:
1. Students have a MobyMax.com account they may log into at home. They are on the honor system that all work done will be their own, however feel free to sit with them and talk to them about the concepts. Just make sure the answers to the questions are their own. Work on MobyMax is Common Core/Alaska Standards aligned.
2. Math Facts practice is crucial for this grade level. We will work to gain speed on addition and subtraction, while we learn multiplication and division and gain speed on those, as well. Traditional flashcards are perfect practice. There are subtraction and multiplication wrap-ups available for check out in class. Students are welcome to take home extra sheets of 100. If you are a technology user at home, there are lots of sites for online practice. Skies the limit! We use MobyMax.com Fact Master and Reflex Math Facts Fluency, both of which your child has a school account for.
3. Students also have an IXL.com math standards math practice account. They are welcome to work on these concepts at home, as well, again...on the honor system that they are the only one using the account and they are working independently. Like MobyMax.com, please feel free to check out what they are working on, note any struggles, and talk to them about the concepts. The answers need to be their own in the end.
4. Some spelling practice ideas are: give your child practice tests (written and/or aloud), let them use Spellingcity.com, make flashcards, spell aloud while making dinner or driving in the car, let them make "rainbow words" by writing one word at a time on paper while spelling it out loud, then using two other colors to trace and spell the words out loud again and again, or any other idea that you find works for your child!
5. For reading, I suggest a balance of fiction and non-fiction reading. Students are required to have 2 Accelerated Reader (AR) points per week, which we will work on at home and in school. In third grade, we focus mainly on chapter books for independent, group, and home reading. Picture books are utilized in class for all of our content areas studies and students can gain points towards their weekly AR goal from these also. Each trimester, I will make reading recommendations to the individual students based on their needs and reading levels. Let me know if you would like an AR reading report for your child at anytime. Reports are printed for students, as needed and a full report for each trimester is provided at student-led conference time.
6. Accelerated Math is one program that I will be using to individualize your child's math work. Most of the AM work is done in the classroom, however if your child falls behind (2 points per week are required on AM also), needs extra assistance, or owes time on AM they may have to do extra work on it. We have gone paperless for AM.
